How do you know who will make a good leader?
How do you choose the right person to fill a position when all the applicants appear to fill the description more than adequately?
Getting the right person in the right job at the right time can be extremely difficult. How often have you thought you got the right one only to quickly discover they were a complete mismatch?
It used to be a question of ascertaining someone’s skill set and experience from what they achieved in the past.
Not any longer.
Today the need is to see the potential in the applicant. Do they have what it takes deliver for the future of an organisation and the capability to nurture and develop others? In other words can they change and adapt themselves to respond to a rapidly changing work environment?
VUCA is a term used by Daniel Goleman author of Focus, The hidden driver of excellence. It stands for:
- Ambiguous Environment
Which pretty much sums up our world as we experience it today.
In an article in the June edition of HBR Claudio Fernandez-Araoz discusses the role of VUCA in the corporate environment. He states “it’s not a question of an employee or staff member having the right skills, it’s whether they have the potential to learn new ones.”
